When men dominated the movie business, three women found their ways to film direction: Dorothy Arzner, Ida Lupino, and Lina Wertmüller. For Mark Spano’s Spring continuing education course at Duke University’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), he screened films by each director to provide, according to the Course Description, “a comprehensive examination of the unique perspectives and narrative styles brought forth by these trailblazing female directors.” The course “analyzed the distinctive attributes of films created by women compared to those created by men.” The three films were: “Dance, Girl, Dance” (1940), Dorothy Arzner; “Outrage” (1950), Ida Lupino; and “Seven Beauties” (1975), Lina Wertmuller.
